What\u2019s the right thing to do? How can you ensure that employees know the rules?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Update Your Work from Home Policy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Employees who are self-isolating but don\u2019t have symptoms don\u2019t get sick pay. Employees should be offered the option of working from home while self-isolating if it&#8217;s possible. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most companies have the technology to enable staff to work from home. This makes for less disruption for everyone. Employees\u2019 routines don\u2019t get disrupted for another two weeks. And businesses can maintain their productivity levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Change Your Holiday Request Policy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Some businesses require employees to give advanced notice when <a href=\"https:\/\/blogsource.theholidaytracker.co.uk\/2020\/08\/19\/furlough-scheme-and-employee-holidays-how-does-it-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">taking annual leave<\/a>. However, it isn&#8217;t always possible for an employee to take additional leave to quarantine if they need to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With this in mind, consider giving employees the option to book leave at the last minute, particularly if they\u2019re travelling abroad. Then they won\u2019t have to worry about the implications of quarantining on their holiday or their job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Keep Communications Clear<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Clear communications with employees are always important. But at a time like this, when the rules are changing on a near-daily basis, it\u2019s more important than ever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Send regular updates to your employees so that they understand what the rules are, nationally and within the business. Your staff will know exactly what to expect if they\u2019re considering going on holiday. Or if they have already booked a break.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Look out for the Latest Government Guidelines<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sign up for the government <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/email-signup?topic=\/coronavirus-taxon\">coronavirus mailing list<\/a>. This will keep you informed of all the latest travel guidelines. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Getting your information from the government is one of the fastest ways to get the latest updates. You can then use this information to keep your employees informed and make any necessary policy changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Advise Employees of Government Support Options<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The government has brought out new rules which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cipd.co.uk\/news-views\/coronavirus\/faqs\/employees-self-isolating-symptoms\">offer financial help<\/a> to employees who are on low-income jobs, cannot work from home, and need to self-isolate. This came into force on 1 September.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To qualify, the employee must:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Have tested positive for COVID-19, or received a notification from Test and Trace asking them to self-isolate<\/li><li>Comply with the notification to isolate<\/li><li>Provide contact details to their local authority<\/li><li>Be unable to work from home and lose income as a result<\/li><li>Receive Universal Credit or Working Tax Credit<\/li><li>Be in an area with high rates of COVID-19.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>At the time of writing, this support pays \u00a3130 to anyone who\u2019s tested positive and has to self-isolate for ten days. Members of an infected person\u2019s household who have tested positive and need to self-isolate for 14 days get \u00a3182. And anyone who\u2019s identified as a contact of someone who\u2019s tested positive and needs to self-isolate will receive \u00a313 per day (up to \u00a3182).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Get Professional Advice<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re not sure about your policies or if you\u2019re on the right track, it can help to talk to a HR expert outside of your business &#8211; such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrdept.co.uk\/\">HR Dept<\/a>.
